What does 1.G contain?

Basic course at STX

The high school program consists of a basic course lasting three months and a specialized course lasting just over two and a half years.

The basic course is the same for all students at STX and consists of the following compulsory subjects:

  • Danish
  • English
  • mathematics
  • sports
  • social studies

In addition, during the basic course, you will receive instruction in general language comprehension (ap) and basic natural sciences (nv) as well as your artistic subject. There is also instruction in a number of subjects (Danish, English, mathematics, social studies, second foreign language (German/Spanish/French). These subjects include an introduction to the subject, and the subjects that are also part of the study program are introduced during the basic course. The subjects that you do not encounter in the basic course are covered in a special introduction, where you must choose two of the subjects.

Fields of study

The study program classes are formed based on the students' choice of study program and start at the beginning of November. You can read much more about the study programs here.

AP – GENERAL LANGUAGE COMPREHENSION

General language comprehension is a course in which English, Danish, and Latin work together to give you an understanding of the elements that are common to all languages. The course includes linguistic analysis of texts and a brief introduction to Latin. After the basic course, an evaluation of the students' learning outcomes in general language comprehension is carried out. Participation in this evaluation is mandatory.

One grade is given, which is recorded on your exam certificate and counts towards your exam average.

NV – BASIC COURSE IN NATURAL SCIENCES

The basic science course is structured around thematic modules in biology, physical geography, physics, and chemistry. The aim is to give you an insight into scientific thinking. After the basic course, the basic science course concludes with an internal exam. This exam is compulsory.

One grade is given, which is recorded on your exam certificate and counts towards your exam average.

What does 1.hf contain?

Communal breakfast

At the beginning of the school year, we will start some days with a module involving a communal breakfast in the canteen. This has a social purpose, as many of you come from the Kolding area and do not know each other beforehand.

NF AND KS

At HF, some subjects are organized into subject groups. This applies to NF (biology, chemistry, and physical geography) and KS (history, social studies, and religion). Common to NF and KS is that teaching is generally theme-based across the three participating subjects. This gives you a broader academic overview when the topic is examined differently by the participating subjects.

HO – History assignment

At the end of the first semester, students write a history assignment. This gives them practice in writing a major assignment ahead of the SSO, which is written in the second semester.

STUDY BOOK AND TUTORING PROGRAM

All HF students have an electronic study book. The purpose of the study book is to give you the opportunity to set goals for your educational program and, together with your student advisor and teacher tutor, assess whether you are achieving your goals and what new goals you should set. You have three scheduled meetings per year with your teacher tutor. You are welcome to contact your study advisor as needed.

CHOICE OF SUBJECT PACKAGE

In week 48, PP1 is held, which is one of the three project/internship courses you must take at HF. At PP1, you will be prepared to choose your HF subject package. You will be introduced to subjects you are not yet familiar with and learn more about your own career aspirations. The actual subject package selection takes place in mid-January. At the end of January, new classes are formed so that you will be in a class with others who have chosen the same subject package as you. Teaching in the subject package subjects does not begin until the second semester.

Distribution of books

During your time at high school, you will be given many books. You should therefore be aware of the following:

  • When you receive a book, you must sign a book list that is passed around the class. Only sign if you have received the book.

  • Always write your name, class, and year in your books. This is very important, as it is the only way we can see that it is your book and register your return correctly. If you lose or damage a book, you will have to pay for it.

  • You are not allowed to fetch books from the book cellar yourself, even if it is unlocked. You must always contact either your teacher or the office.

View your loans

On Lectio, under "Current," you will find the link to BOGDEPOT. Click on "My student loans" to see which books we have registered for you. Keep track of which books you need to return on an ongoing basis and check on Lectio that you have registered the correct email address and phone number so that we can send you messages about book returns.

E-books

During the school year, you will also have access to e-books and i-books via various portals. You will need your UNI login to access them. If you are unsure about anything or have questions about the books, you are always welcome to contact your teacher or Charlotte Rendboe at the office.

Returning books

You must return your books when you finish a course. This can be done at the office on an ongoing basis, or at the end of the school year, when the book cellar is open almost every day. You can stay informed via the school's information screens and Lectio, where it is posted when the book cellar is open.

Please remember to return your books on time, otherwise you will be billed for late returns.

Volunteer activities

loading="lazy"

student council

The student council at KG consists of one representative from each class, who are elected at the beginning of each school year. They represent the interests of the students at the school and therefore have representatives on all committees relevant to the students and on the school board. This means that as a member of the student council, you have a significant influence on the day-to-day running of the school. The student council meets approximately once a month to discuss and decide on current issues.

In addition to having influence, the Student Council is a great place to get to know other students from all programs and years, so if you want influence and camaraderie, the Student Council is the right place for you!

At the beginning of the school year, representatives from the student council visit the new classes to provide information about the work of the student council and the opportunities for student influence at the school.

loading="lazy"

FITNESS ROOM

School students can use the facilities at selected times at their own risk for an annual fee of DKK 400. Students who start using the fitness room on January 1 pay a semi-annual fee of DKK 200.

To use the fitness room, you must have completed a user course with a physical education teacher and sign a form stating that you will comply with the rules of use and conduct.

loading="lazy"

FRIDAY CAFÉ

Approximately four times a year, there is a Friday café where you can socialize, play games, and listen to music across all classes. The Friday café is organized by the Friday café committee (students). If the Friday café is something for you, keep an eye on Lectio and the morning assemblies, where new members will be announced.

loading="lazy"

Green Group

If you care about the environment and want to help make KG a green school, join the Green Group. Keep an eye on Lectio for meeting dates.

loading="lazy"

MUN – Model United Nations

In MUN, students meet to discuss global/international political challenges and issues based on the interests and backgrounds of different countries (as is done in the UN). The discussions are held in English, and in addition to the excitement of discussing politics with other young people, you also train your global understanding and, not least, your English skills. A few times a year, students participate in MUN conferences in Denmark and/or abroad.

loading="lazy"

MUSICAL/SCHOOL PERFORMANCE

Every year, the school's students put on a school performance. They work on music and drama throughout the fall. In January, the performance is shown over several days. Many students are needed for the performance—both to sing and dance and to help with technology, costumes, makeup, marketing, and much more.

Watch our film about the musical here

loading="lazy"

The Spanish Pipe

KG's school magazine is called "Spanskrøret" (The Spanish Pipe). The students themselves are responsible for appointing the editorial team and setting the journalistic tone. There is room to write about both fun and serious topics – but always without disparaging anyone. If the school magazine is something for you, keep an eye on Lectio and the morning assemblies, where new members will be announced.

loading="lazy"

SPORTS, MUSIC, AND OTHER COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE BOARD

During the school year, there are opportunities in the afternoons to participate in various activities across classes, grades, and programs. For example, volleyball, soccer, basketball, boxing, yoga, music, board games, or computer games. In music, you can borrow the school's rehearsal room, and for sports activities, you can use the school's sports hall and fitness room. In some of the ball games, the school also participates in nationwide tournaments.

loading="lazy"

STUDY CIRCLES

If you and some other students find a particular subject/area really exciting to work with, we can set up a study group where you can delve deeper into the subject and explore it together with one or more teachers.

loading="lazy"

STUDY TRIPS

As part of the teaching on the three programs, study trips are organized both domestically and abroad. The study trips have both academic and social purposes.
You pay for participation in the study trips yourself.

loading="lazy"

SVADA

SVADA is the name of KG's party committee, which organizes four large student parties each year. The parties are planned and run by the SVADA committee, which consists of students from across different classes and year groups. If SVADA is something for you, keep an eye on Lectio and morning assemblies, where new members will be announced.

Information for parents

Insurance matters

School students must take out accident and/or home contents insurance themselves. In the event of theft from a student (e.g., bicycle or moped), the damage must be reported to the student's own/parents' insurance company. When driving your own car to excursions and similar events, any damage must also be reported to the car's insurance company, as the school bears no responsibility in such cases.

Parents' introductory evening

All parents and first-year students are invited to a parent-teacher meeting in September. At this meeting, the school management, student counselors, and teachers will talk about the further course of the programs. This includes how the choice of study programs (STX), subject packages (HF), and subjects in the diploma program (IB) will take place.

PARENT CONSULTATION

In February, parent-teacher conferences are held for parents of students in 1st year and pre-IB. This is an opportunity to discuss the student's progress in each subject with the teachers. Students are welcome to attend the parent-teacher conference. There are no parent-teacher conferences for HF classes.

Other information

loading="lazy"

cancellation of classes

Occasionally, planned lessons are canceled, e.g., due to a teacher's illness, care day, course participation, or similar. Cancellations may also be due to joint events or interdisciplinary courses. This is taken into account when planning the school year. Lessons are moved to other days so that the prescribed teaching can be provided.
This creates scope for cancellations without compromising the teaching objectives.

loading="lazy"

Fire

Fire safety instructions are posted in all classrooms. Fire drills are held once a year. In the event of a fire, it is important to quickly exit the building and proceed to the sports field, where all classes must gather and remain with the teacher who was with them when the alarm sounded.

loading="lazy"

COMPUTERS AND IT

You will need to bring a computer with you in order to keep up with the subjects. At the school, we have a limited number of desktop computers in the student areas, which the school's students can use if they are not being used for teaching purposes. The school has fast and reliable WiFi. The network is called "SKOLENET". To log on to the network, you will be given a personal username and password. You will also be given access to Office 365, where you can save essays, notes, etc. Problems with the school's IT equipment and wireless network are handled by Rifet Begic.

Problems with personal computers are not handled by the school.

loading="lazy"

DOT

Every year, we hold a large school party for all the school's students and parents, where we celebrate the school's founding in 1542.

The evening begins for graduating students with dancing Les Lanciers at Koldinghus. Afterwards, there will be a communal dinner and entertainment for everyone at KG, with food provided by the chef's company. Various bands will perform, and the music will be tailored so that both students and parents can join in. A big party you won't want to miss.

Watch our video about DOT here

loading="lazy"

Personal contribution

A small fee is charged at the start of the school year to cover the costs of social activities, printer chips, and various materials.

Students and parents (of students under the age of 18) will receive a message about this in e-boks.

loading="lazy"

Student lockers

You can rent a locker at the school through the company Mylocker. The price is DKK 150 per school year.

Order your cabinet here

loading="lazy"

PHOTOCOPYING AND PRINTING

There are photocopiers outside the M sector and in the N sector. The machines can be used for photocopying and printing using the chip issued at the start of the school year. Each student is allocated 400 "clips" for photocopying and printing. One black-and-white print or copy counts as one clip, while one color print/color copy counts as four clips. Once the 400 clips have been used up, additional clips can be purchased at the office. The price is DKK 1 per clip, and a minimum of 25 clips must be purchased.

loading="lazy"

EXEMPTION FROM TEACHING

Absence from school will only be granted in exceptional cases.Absence from classes will only be credited if the activities are related to school activities or teaching.

loading="lazy"

SPORTS

Physical education is compulsory in pre-IB and at all grade levels at STX. At HF, physical education is an elective subject. In order to actively participate in physical education classes, students must arrive dressed for class. Students who have forgotten their physical education clothes or have an injury will be asked to observe the physical education class and take notes. Repeatedly forgetting your physical education clothes is considered a violation of the school's study and order rules. If you are unable to participate in physical education classes for several lessons in a row due to an injury, you may be asked to provide documentation. However, documentation is not necessary if the cause is immediately apparent. In the case of long-term injuries, a doctor's certificate is always required. The cost of the certificate is paid by the student.

loading="lazy"

The cafeteria

Brian Therp is the school's canteen manager and makes sure you don't go hungry while you're at school. The canteen sells sandwiches, baguettes with fillings, salads, hot dishes, various drinks, fruit, and sweets. You can pay by card and MobilePay.

loading="lazy"

CHARACTERS

In 1st year, you will receive grades twice: midterm grades in January and final grades before the summer holidays. In 2nd and 3rd year, you will receive midterm grades twice during the school year and a final grade at the end of the year. Until you turn 18, your parents are allowed to read your grades on Lectio. They can access your grades by contacting the office.

HF students do not receive grades, but another form of evaluation is carried out in HF classes, including in connection with tutor interviews.

loading="lazy"

COMPLAINT

If you wish to appeal against decisions made at the school, please contact the principal for further guidance.

loading="lazy"

Lectio

Lectio is the program that the school uses for schedules, schedule changes, homework, grades, messages, uploading assignments, etc. It is important to log into Lectio every day to stay informed. You should also check your messages in Lectio every day.

You must log in with My-ID

You can get Lectio on your mobile phone by following this guide.

Please note: if you pay for Lectio as an app, it is a third-party app that has nothing to do with Lectio. There may therefore be errors and missing updates. Therefore, only use the free version referred to in the guide above.

loading="lazy"

HOMEWORK CAFÉ

A homework café is held once a week throughout most of the school year. We start around September 1 and finish at the beginning of May. Homework help is offered in mathematics and other subjects if there is a desire or need for it. Homework help is provided by the school's teachers and older students. More information about time and place will be announced in Lectio.

loading="lazy"

Pocket calculators

Mathematics at B and A level requires a CAS tool. At the beginning of 1st year, your mathematics teacher will instruct you on which program to use and how to use it. The mathematics teacher will help you find out where to buy it. We expect everyone to bring a calculator equivalent to TI30 at the start of the school year. This can also be a calculator program on a computer you bring with you. In 1st year HF, we use WordMat. The teachers will help you download the program.

loading="lazy"

READING GUIDE

The reading tutor will help you if you have problems (big or small) with reading or writing. You can contact C2 on your own initiative or at the request of a teacher. The reading tutor has two functions: to advise and to teach. If you are offered teaching by the reading tutor, this will take place as one-to-one teaching or in small groups outside the normal timetable.

The reading guide consists of Rune Staun Søndergaard, Helene Louise Elbæk, and Una Eriksen.

loading="lazy"

ENVIRONMENT/RECYCLING

At KG, we care about the environment, and as a student, you can help.
Dispose of your waste properly, and we will take it to be recycled.
In the cafeteria, there is a container for empty bottles (glass and plastic). In the departments, there are boxes for paper waste next to the photocopiers.
And if you have old batteries, defective chargers, or similar items that you want to throw away during the school day, you can leave them in the janitor's office.

loading="lazy"

MORNING MEETING

Morning assemblies are held in the cafeteria approximately every other week. The students on the morning assembly committee, together with the principal, are responsible for organizing the morning assemblies.

loading="lazy"

AGE OF MAJORITY

If you are 18 years of age or older, you are considered an adult, and all communications from the school will therefore be directed to you. If you are under 18 years of age, your parents will be notified of excessive absences and any resulting sanctions.

Students under the age of 18 cannot withdraw from upper secondary school, HF or IB without their parents' written consent.

loading="lazy"

Cleanup

YOU are responsible for cleaning up after yourself when you are at school. This applies to both classrooms and common areas. YOU must also tidy up after yourself at the end of each lesson, unless you are staying in the same room after break time.

loading="lazy"

Smoking – NICOTINE-FREE SCHOOL HOURS

As with all other youth education programs, KG has a nicotine-free school policy. This means that students are not allowed to use nicotine-containing products during the period from the start time to the end time of the first and last scheduled teaching activity of the day – typically from 8:05 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The nicotine-free school hours apply regardless of whether you are on school grounds or elsewhere. A violation of the nicotine-free school hours is considered a breach of the school's study and order rules and will be sanctioned in accordance with these rules.

loading="lazy"

SPS

SPS stands for special educational support and provides extra help for those with physical or mental disabilities (e.g., ADHD, autism, anorexia, anxiety, or hearing impairment). Contact KG's reading advisors or SPS coordinators if you are dyslexic or have a disability.

Read more about SPS here

loading="lazy"

STUDY AND CONDUCT RULES

You are required to familiarize yourself with the school's study and conduct rules, which can be found on the school's website under ABC at KG. The study and conduct rules set out the legal framework for how to behave at school. However, the main points of the study and conduct rules are quite simple and are based on common sense: as a student at KG, you must take care of your schoolwork (be on time, do your homework, do not cheat on assignments, hand in assignments, etc.), and you must behave appropriately. Most of our students do this, but if you are unable to live up to these expectations, the school may impose various sanctions. All of this is specified in more detail in the study and conduct rules.

loading="lazy"

STUDY SKILLS

At Kolding Gymnasium, we have compiled an overview of the competencies that our students in STX and HF must achieve during their education. It includes both general and multidisciplinary study competencies and shows which competencies must be achieved after each stage of the program. You can find the overview here

loading="lazy"

STUDY CARD

All students are photographed at the start of the school year. Once the photo has been uploaded to Lectio, you can access your student card electronically under More -> Student card. The QR code is used to validate whether the student card is active or inactive, and can be displayed by clicking on "Show QR code."

loading="lazy"

STUDY GUIDE

Each class has a student counselor who acts as an advisor to students in academic and non-academic matters. At the beginning of the school year, the student counselor collaborates with subject teachers to develop a course in study skills. During the school year, an introductory meeting is held with all students. During the school year, the student counselor will also provide information about elective courses in 2.g/3.g/2.hf and IB, educational and career opportunities, and exams. You can always contact your student counselor, who has an office in Vg1 and V2.

loading="lazy"

TERM TEST

During February or March, term exams will be held in the subjects that conclude with exams in the summer.

Annual test

After 1st and 2nd year, a number of written and oral exams are held that are not included in the final exams. The number of oral exams per year may vary.

loading="lazy"

TRANSPORTATION COSTS

You can get a discount on transportation costs by purchasing a youth card.
You must apply for the card yourself at www.ungdomskort.dk.
Please note that there is a minimum processing time of two weeks when ordering.

SU

Anyone who is enrolled in a youth education program can receive a grant from the State Education Grant (SU) when they turn 18.

SU is paid from the quarter that begins after you turn 18. For example, if your birthday is on January 2, you will receive support from April 1.

If you are 20 years of age or older and do not live at home, you can receive SU as a non-resident (which provides a higher amount). Under certain circumstances, students under the age of 20 who live away from home can be exempted from the age rule, e.g. if their parents live far from the school (at least 20 km or 75 minutes' travel time by public transport), if the student has been living away from home for a year before becoming eligible for SU, or if there are very special circumstances in the home. This refers to housing conditions and social circumstances in general. The basic grant for 18-19-year-olds can be supplemented with an additional grant, which depends on the parents' income two years ago. The parents' gross income is used and adjusted if there are minor siblings.

If you receive SU, you should be aware that there are limits to how much you can earn before your SU is reduced. You can read all about amounts, limits, applications, and options for SU loans at www.su.dk.

You can also contact the school office, which will be happy to answer your questions and help you apply for SU.
